It really varies depending on your needs, but will generally be in the neighborhood of $10,000 for solar electric. For solar hot water, it may be just a few thousand.
Our house is in California, using about 500 kWh/month on average (no air conditioning, gas heat). The 3 kW array we put up cost $12,000 net, but that was 3 years ago. Today, it would be $10,000. It supplies substantially all our electircity. Since we are grid-tied, there are no batteries involved.
The best way to get an accurate idea of how much it would cost in your area would be to actually get a free quote from a local solar installer. You can always say no afterwards, but will learn a lot in the process.

We just got thru investigating this. In Texas, the minimum for installing enuf panels to produce sufficient electricity to help power a 2500 sq ft house was $25,000. And that does not include batteries. Batteries are extra. So you only get power when it’s sunny. And you need about 100% open sunlite on the south side of your house, no trees, etc.
And that’s the lowest starting price. More panels, more money, etc. Tho there is some federal govt rebate money available and some local communities and electric companies are also offering rebates.
