Question by Gerbil Lover: If there are solar energy panels, is there anything to save water?
I know there are solar energy panels and wind turbines but is there anything for water? Also, how much money would you save a year if you installed a solar panel and wind turbine? No rude comments.

Practically all you ever hear about is solar panels… are they really so much more effective then other methods, such as using energy from the sun to power a steam-powered turbine enclosed in a system with a vacuum so that the water evaporates at a much lower temperature to power a turbine?

Assuming that you plan to use car batteries or something similar(deep cycle), plus an inverter (or many), and solar panels? And what kind of solar panels should you get? What will the approximate cost be for such a set up?

The 510 watt system in the source costs ,525.00. That is just the parts. It is basically a DIY system and the ,525.00 is just a bunch of panels, batteries and other parts that you connect yourself. And it is a 12V DC system, so you need to add an inverter for an extra 0 or so to get an AC system.

Everwhere I go, I see these orange things at roadwork sites with three or four solar panels on them. What are they? Are they completely solar powered? Are they really necessary. How much does each one of these panels cost? Is Obama (stimulus) money paying for these?

They are probably road signs or warning lights.
Before solar panels became cheap, they used to run a diesel generator and string cable along the highway to power these things.
I don’t suppose any stimulus package pays for them, they are just cheaper to operate than the other kind.

Question by Dave: Can you use a commercial car wash on an RV with solar panels permanently mounted to the roof?
We have a car wash which can accommodate RVs, but I have solar panels attached permanently to the roof of the RV and it is getting dirty and want to wash it. But can a commercial car wash with its brushes harm the solar panels on the roof.
The solar panels are bolted securely horizontal to the roof about 2 inches above it.

Question by John M: How much energy is required to produce, transport and install solar panels?
I’m wondering if you total up all the electricity a plant making solar panels uses in a year, the energy the workers take to travel to their jobs each day, the energy used to transport the finished product to consumers and finally the energy used to install them and then compare it to the energy all of these panels will produce during their 20 year life will anything be gained?

Or would be have been ahead to just not bother making the panels in the first place.

I dont know about right now, but it use to be that solar power took so much power and time to create the panels that it really isnt energy efficient for like hundreds of years for each panel. Maybe they have a new way of producing the panels now though. Yes, it is a delima, but, it will create more jobs, at this point that all that matters……………I hope. Its just good that alternative fuel and power sources are becoming more of a focus.
Did you catch the show about the uses of corn on the discovery channel recently if not, watch for it, its almost to the pont if we cant grow corn, we cant function. It was mind blowing.

The average solar radiation incident on the panels is 305 W/m2, averaged over all conditions for a year. How many kilowatt hours of electricity will the solar panels generate in 20 days?

area is 28.64 m²
incident power is 305 W/m² x 28.64 m² = 8740 watts
output power = 8740 watts x 0.103 = 900 watts

900 watts x 24 hr/day x 20 days = 432000 watt-hour / day or 432 kW-hour / day
