How much energy is required to produce, transport and install solar panels?
Question by John M: How much energy is required to produce, transport and install solar panels?
I’m wondering if you total up all the electricity a plant making solar panels uses in a year, the energy the workers take to travel to their jobs each day, the energy used to transport the finished product to consumers and finally the energy used to install them and then compare it to the energy all of these panels will produce during their 20 year life will anything be gained?
Or would be have been ahead to just not bother making the panels in the first place.

I dont know about right now, but it use to be that solar power took so much power and time to create the panels that it really isnt energy efficient for like hundreds of years for each panel. Maybe they have a new way of producing the panels now though. Yes, it is a delima, but, it will create more jobs, at this point that all that matters……………I hope. Its just good that alternative fuel and power sources are becoming more of a focus.
Did you catch the show about the uses of corn on the discovery channel recently if not, watch for it, its almost to the pont if we cant grow corn, we cant function. It was mind blowing.

Where can I learn how to install and use solar panels on my home?
Question by therainman: Where can I learn how to install and use solar panels on my home?
I’m very interested in putting solar panels on my roof or in my windows because of all the sunlight i get. Where can I find information on how I can actually hook things up to use solar panels for real electricity from start to finsih?
Thanks!

How much power can Solar Power give?
Question by PLDGOR: How much power can Solar Power give?
I’m wanting to write a book. In this book, I am thinking of having a Solar Tower, covered with Solar panels. Would this be enough to generate enough power for a small city or town?
Also, what else would I need? Wind power? I’m thinking of having it set on smaller islands near England, and they need to be self sufficient.

sounds really cool!
you should probably make the solar tower extremely high…
and you should have lots of wind power too. in reality, the tower would be near impossible to create, and supply maybe a house for everyday electricity, but nobody really knows that in real life.
self sufficient is the way to go
(you don’t need to tell readers about the ‘only supplying a house’ thing because most people are oblivious when it comes to solar power. just say that it supplies an entire city and they’ll believe it!)
good luck!

Q&A: How many kilowatt hours of electricity will the solar panels generate in 20 days?
Question by murat: How many kilowatt hours of electricity will the solar panels generate in 20 days?
A house with a south-facing roof has photovoltaic panels on the roof. The photovoltaic panels have an efficiency of 10.3 % and occupy an area with dimensions 3.35 m by 8.55 m. The average solar radiation incident on the panels is 305 W/m2, averaged over all conditions for a year. How many kilowatt hours of electricity will the solar panels generate in 20 days?
Best answer:
Answer by billrussell42
area is 28.64 m²
incident power is 305 W/m² x 28.64 m² = 8740 watts
output power = 8740 watts x 0.103 = 900 watts
900 watts x 24 hr/day x 20 days = 432000 watt-hour / day or 432 kW-hour / day
.

Q&A: What is the probability that none of the houses have solar panels to generate electricty?
Question by treysongz: What is the probability that none of the houses have solar panels to generate electricty?
Using a survey conducted in Winter 2009, it was estimated that only 1% of New Zealanders have solar panels on their houses to generate electricity. Consider a random sample of 20 New Zealand households.
a) What is the probability that at least one of them has solar panels to generate electricity?
b) What is the probability that none of them have solar panels to generate electricity?

Binomial Sampling Distribution:
P(n) = C(N,n) * p^n * (1-p)^(N-n)
where N = 20 and n = 0:
P(0) = C(20,0) * (1/100)^0 * (99/100)^(20-0) =
1 * 1 * 99^20 / 100^20 =
note: divided numerator and denominator by a common multiple of 10/
8179069375972306130 / 10000000000000000 =
P(0)= 0.8179
a) At least one has solar panels: P(n>0) = 1.0 – P(0) = 1.0 – 0.8179 = 0.1821
b) None of the 20 have solar panels: P(n=0) = P(0) = 0.8179

How Many batteries and solar panels would it take to power an RV?
Question by Rogon: How Many batteries and solar panels would it take to power an RV?
I want to Make my RV green, But i also want it to be able to power a laptop an xbox360 and an HDTV all at the same time (not while driving). So i really need some high powered solar panels and batteries, also what can i do to cut down on energy cost.
Best answer:
Answer by campbelp2002
Since you usually drive the RV during the day and park at night, you cant use solar power while parked. And covering the entire roof of the motor home would only make about 1 HP worth of solar energy (1 HP = 746 watts). You are better off just charging the batteries with the engine while you drive. But what self respecting tree hugger would be caught dead driving a gas guzzling RV anyway?
